Malaysians far and wide have been barraged with the increasing number of e-Wallets and sometimes we may just wonder, "How many e-Wallets will actually be enough?". Here in GrowMyFinance, we unpack the full list of e-Wallets that have the marketing spend (or not..) that are lucky to fall upon your eyes when you shop or dine.
1. Boost

Website: https://www.myboost.com.my
Available on:
- iOS: https://apps.apple.com/my/app/boost/id1235987570
- Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=my.com.myboost
Best For:
- Chance to obtain cashback via Shake Rewards. Shake your phone after completing a transaction to receive random amounts of cashback.
- Maybank American Express (Amex) for 5x Treatspoints & 5% weekend cashback for reloads into Boost (Updated: Effective 8th July, Maybank cease all rewards and cashbacks for reloads into e-Wallets).
- Celcom Postpaid Lines. Being in the Axiata ecosystem, payment via Boost can provide a cashback up to RM6 where in my case, a RM6 cashback on a RM136 bill (4.4% cashback).
- Other utilities such as post-paid uMobile, Unifi or Syabas. Paying utilities via this method not only gives you additional credit card points but also additional cashback (up to 2.5% cashback).
2. BigPay

Website: https://www.bigpayme.com/
Available on:
- iOS: https://apps.apple.com/my/app/bigpay-challenge-banking/id1243379690
- Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tpaay.bigpay
Best For:
- Frequent Travellers. BigPay's strongest suite will definitely be their competitive cross-border currency exchange rate. Since BigPay provides you with a Mastercard debit card, you're able to withdraw foreign currency in most ATMs at your destination. As of now, BigPay only charge up to RM10 for withdrawals overseas. All the fees are listed here: https://www.bigpayme.com/fees-charges
- Business Owners/Digital Marketers. For ad-buying entrepreneurs and marketers, ad platforms such as LinkedIn or other softwares that charges in USD or SGD should be paid with BigPay for better currency exchange rates compared to traditional credit cards. This can prove to be rather significant for those who are looking for the best bang for their buck.
- Savvy Money Managers. For those who prefers to live a cashless life and prefers to have their e-Wallets to inform where their expenses are actually going, BigPay by far goes a long way in terms of providing you with a breakdown of your expenditure. Most if not all e-Wallets do not help their users to classify their expenditure, hence, this feature makes BigPay stands out from their competitors.
- Avid AirAsia travellers. Except for bank transfer, all other payments on AirAsia comes with additional charge (AirAsia, seriously). As part of their cunning plan, all transactions on airasia.com paid with BigPay comes at no additional cost. So for those who still chooses to pay with their credit card, reload your BigPay with your credit card (avoid using Maybank credit cards as there will not be any cash back or points, choose alternative credit cards) and make the payment on airasia.com with your BigPay card.
- Worst for BIG Points. It's terrible on BigPay, don't bother getting BigPay to gather points. To give you a perspective, a RM1000 flight ticket payment will give you a total of 70 BIG points ~ less than RM1 value (20 BIG points for reloading RM1000 into your wallet and an additional 50 BIG points for making the transaction of RM1000). An estimated round trip to Taiwan requires 64,000 BIG points, hence, you will need approximately 915x of a RM1000 transaction to earn a round trip to Taiwan. Don't bother.
